Why Does My House Have Icicles?

Icicles and ice damming are a direct result of inadequate attic insulation and improper attic ventilation. Heat loss from the living space melts the snow pack from the bottom. That water then drains down the "warm roof" until it hits the colder area of the soffit or overhang and then refreezes. As the melt and refreeze continues, the ice will build up in the frozen gutters and work its way up the roof. If you have a home with little or no overhang, the ice can find its way into your living area. Home that are not equipped with an ice and water underlayment under the first course of shingles, tend to have more ice problems.

One simple fix is removing snow from the affected area, but be careful not to damage the shingles. Throw some good quality ice melt on the roof to speed up the process. Do not get on the roof and try to remove the ice from the gutters and roof. You will do more damage than the ice buildup.

The most effective way to keep the ice build up to a minimum is adding more insulation to your attic. Roof dormers and living areas on the upper floors will sometimes reduce the area that can be used for more insulation.
